ABOUT GANESHA

One of the most worshiped and beloved deities in Hinduism, Ganesha is widely revered as the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts and sciences, the guardian of beauty, grace, and compassion, and the deva of intellect and wisdom. Known as the Lord of Good Fortune or Lord of New Beginnings, his grace is invoked before any new venture, for it is believed that he will remove all obstacles (material and spiritual), and bring success. His enormous head signifies wisdom and knowledge. Elephants don't walk around obstacles, nor are they stopped by them. They just remove them and continue on their journey. In this way his elephant embodiment signifies effortlessness. It is believed that when we worship Lord Ganesha these qualities are kindled within us. His body always features at least 4 arms, a symbol of his divinity as he balances all the competing forces in the world. His big belly signifies his ability to swallow all the sorrows of the world while he protects it and provides for its well being. Every new undertaking is blessed by the generosity and good will of this God of New Beginnings.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF GANESHA

The origins of Ganesha can be traced to the ancient Hindu texts known as the Vedas, where he is mentioned as a minor deity associated with wisdom and auspicious beginnings.

However, it was during the Puranic period, around 600-300 BCE, that Ganesha began to emerge as a prominent figure in Hindu mythology. According to legend, Ganesha is the son of Lord Shiva, the destroyer, and the goddess Parvati. The story of his birth varies, but one popular version recounts how Parvati created Ganesha from clay and brought him to life to stand guard while she bathed. When Shiva returned and was denied entry by Ganesha, a confrontation ensued, resulting in Ganesha's head being severed. In remorse, Shiva ordered the head of the first living being he encountered, which happened to be an elephant, to be placed on Ganesha's body, thus restoring him to life.

Ganesha is typically depicted as a deity with the head of an elephant and a human body, often with four arms. His broken tusk, which he is sometimes shown holding, symbolizes sacrifice and the willingness to overcome obstacles.

Over the centuries, Ganesha's popularity grew, and he became widely revered as the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts and sciences, and the god of new beginnings and wisdom. His worship spread throughout the Indian subcontinent and beyond, becoming an integral part of Hindu religious life and culture.

Today, Ganesha is celebrated in various festivals and rituals, most notably during Ganesh Chaturthi, a ten-day festival honoring his birthday, which is observed with great fervor across India. Throughout history, Ganesha has continued to evolve as a symbol of hope, wisdom, and divine intervention, embodying the enduring spirit of Hinduism.

WHY “GANESHA HEALING”?

To me, Ganesha is an extraordinary ally. He represents the perfect equilibrium between force and kindness, and between power and beauty. He also symbolizes the discriminative capacities that each of us hold, which provide the ability to perceive distinctions between truth and illusion, the real and the unreal.

Chinese medicine also recognizes that truth is purely contextual. In contrast with our conventional Western tendency to draw sharp lines of distinction, Chinese thought does not strictly determine the boundaries between rest and motion, mind and matter, sickness and health. Chinese medicine transcends the illusion of separation by residing in the reality of a unified field, a web of inseparable links in a cyclical chain.

May Ganesha watch over you on your healing journey. May he inspire new beginnings, remove material and spiritual obstacles, show you the beauty that occurs when art and science merge, and help you find success.
