GUA SHA
Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese therapy that involves using a smooth-edged tool, typically made of jade or rose quartz, to scrape along the skin's surface. I apply gentle pressure while gliding the tool over skin oiled with a liniment (to prime/lubricate the skin) in specific motions. This technique increases microcirculation to surface tissues, reducing inflammation, and stimulating the immune system and lymphatic system, and aids in detoxification.
During the treatment, I may focus on particular areas of tension or blockages, such as the back, shoulders, neck, or limbs. The scraping action helps to break up adhesions and scar tissue, releasing stagnant energy and promoting the flow of qi and blood. As the tool moves across the skin, it may leave behind temporary redness known as "sha," which indicates increased circulation and the release of toxins.
